After the sudden suicide of his mother, Kwon Hee-seo has lived his life searching for answers. Taken in by an abusive foster family, he is left asking himself the same questions over and over again: What was the inciting incident that caused his mother to take her life? Who was the mysterious man that saved his? And could he be the same esoteric benefactor that has been shrouded in secrecy, supporting Hee-seo from behind the scenes? Unmoored like a tree without roots and desperate for answers, Hee-seo sets his family's home ablaze in hopes of drawing the man out from the shadows. But this reckless attempt for a semblance of clarity in his life may lead Hee-seo to more than he bargained for... Can a tree without roots grow to reach the sun? Or is it destined to wither away in the absence of light?

LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING- THIS MANHWA IS 😙👌 CHEF'S KISS. The art is sooo good, sometimes I almost forgot Hee seo is insane! To be honest, I've always been a bit of a non believer in the "age gap; younger is the top, older is the bottom" trope, but I've decided to embrace the discomfort to see where it goes and WOW is it good. The flip flop between absolute pathetic, sopping wet cat behaviour to "what's the most painless way to break his leg so he'll never be able to leave me" is giving me whiplash, but in a good way! Also because the manhwa starts with how it ends and then hits us with a "8 years earlier" line, we know it's going to be reallll bad for Tae kyung (black hair) and it's nail-biting him watching him lie through his fucking teeth to placate the insane cat (Hee seo) that lives in his apartment. This should go without saying, but my man Hee seo is DOWN TREMENDOUS for Tae kyung , like we're talking yandere level insane shit. (Minor spoiler)
The way I fucking knew he was going to eventually attempt murder/suicide them both-
He also no sense for boundaries and consent? What's that?? Oh right! That's not even mentioning the pseudo-incest thing Tae kyung has got going on with his adoptive brother. It was actually really funny because I was sitting in the car with my dad and it suddenly hit me several chapters later that "brown-haired guy that kissed Tae kyung" = his adoptive brother and I LOST IT. I was cackling all the way home and in the QnA at the end of the season, the author confirmed that yep! He's the second top for the series. To be frank, I don't know what that means but I'm assuming it's like the second-lead love interest. Anyways, I don't want to spoil too much because I want you guys to read it 🙏 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLE
